People. Security. Resilience.

Welcome to the Pacific Regional Security Hub

Who We Are

The Pacific Regional Security Hub (PRSH) is a research and knowledge Hub dedicated to strengthening Pacific-led thinking on regional security. Housed within the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Canterbury, PRSH fosters regional dialogue, scholarly research, and international collaboration to support a more peaceful, resilient, and secure Pacific.

Our mission is to support Pacific-led, interdisciplinary research and policy engagement that addresses both traditional and non-traditional security threats, including climate change, transnational crime, health insecurity, poverty, cyber threats, and the human consequences of environmental change.

Established in 2024 with support from the United Kingdom Government, the Hub was created in recognition of the growing geopolitical focus on the region, and the urgent need to deepen conversations, research, and networks among Pacific scholars, thinkers, and communities.

Our Story

We deepen conversations, research and networks between Pacific thinkers, scholars, civil society, and regional organisations. The Pacific Regional Security Hub was established in 2024 to respond to increased geopolitical attention in the region and to foster Pacific-led security dialogue.

Mission

Our mission is to promote inclusive, innovative and collaborative solutions to traditional and non-traditional security threats—from climate change and transnational crime to cyber threats and human security—informed by Pacific knowledge and leadership.

Actions

We bring together scholars, policymakers and communities to address the region’s most pressing security challenges. Through research, events, and regional engagement, we amplify Pacific voices and support evidence-based responses.

What We Do

Research

We produce original, interdisciplinary research that explores traditional and non-traditional security challenges across the Pacific. Our outputs include discussion papers, short analyses, and policy briefs informed by regional realities and Pacific scholarship.

Events

We host webinars, roundtables, and the annual Pacific Regional Security Conference to foster open dialogue and exchange between scholars, practitioners, governments, and civil society. Our events provide inclusive spaces for regional voices to shape the security agenda.

Network

We are building a growing network of Pacific security thinkers, practitioners, and institutions. By strengthening partnerships across the region and beyond, we promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and long-term capacity-building.

Our Visiting Fellows

Barbara Dreaver brings both journalistic rigor and deep community insight to the PRSH. Her frontline coverage and advocacy for Pacific communities enhances our regional understanding of human security challenges.

Professor Kuper’s work in Micronesia reframes Pacific security from an islander perspective. His contributions ensure the PRSH remains grounded in local agency and geopolitical realities.

Kenneth Gofigan Kuper

Associate Professor, University of Guam

Dr Dinnen’s research into peacebuilding and state formation in Melanesia continues to shape regional approaches to justice and security. His knowledge of regulatory pluralism provides critical insights for the Hub’s work in complex governance environments.
